steinexpo 2023 - Press Release 13

Schlussbericht 2023 – Pressemitteilung Nr. 13

New steinexpo record

Risen above itself

26/08/2023 The 11th steinexpo came to an end with a tremendous success story to tell. After the difficult preceding years, the aim of the event team of this quarry demonstration fair from 23 to 26/08/2023 was to reach the attendance figures of 2017 (53,890) if at all possible – the sensational reality is that this expectation has been surpassed. The official visit count increased to 61,700 (i.e. 15% more compared to 2017). All the indications are that the 11th demonstration fair will have a very special place in the chronicle of this event, which has been held every three years since 1990, as a "record-breaking steinexpo" – with only one unintentional interruption caused by the Corona pandemic in 2020 and the alternative date in 2021. Exhibitors praised the quality of the trade visitors, the extremely professional organisation of the show and confirmed having conducted excellent discussions. Moreover, a whole host of them resulted in surprising business deals.

When the content reflects the numbers

The joy about the start of the fair after the long unintentional and unwelcome break was downright palpable already on the opening day. The weather also played along nicely and presented wonderful photo opportunities for long-lasting memories. The euphoria imbued by the trade fair had gripped all involved and did not let go even after the official opening by Trade Fair Director Dr Friedhelm Rese on Wednesday (23/08, 11 a.m.) until the very end. The 305 exhibitors (compared to 293 in 2017) were also clearly delighted. They had the opportunity to talk to their core target group at the MHI quarry in Nieder-Ofleiden, especially on the first three days of the fair. After the steinexpo organising team had their work cut out in the weeks and days before the start of the fair due to heavy rainfall, the effort invested in thorough preparations now allowed them and the trade visitors to enjoy the show days in full sunshine. It was only on the Friday shortly before the traditional exhibitors' evening that the weather presented itself in a "wet helmet contest" to test whether the precautions of the last few weeks taken against rain actually delivered what they promised – and they did. As soon as the weather god retreated after a brief but fierce appearance, the sun peeked out again just in time for the evening’s get-together. And the surprisingly high number of visitors also meant that a few more special operations were required to provide another 5 ha of parking space, with the MHI Group also having to make a generous helmet contribution from their stock.

Bustling with joy

Apart from the general anticipation of large machines in action, this was not the only area in which the trade fair outgrew itself. The pay-off line of this year's trade fair "Quarry Vision" featured visionary contributions from a wide range of exhibitors, many of which will be indispensable in the future. This includes, of course, autonomous driving, electric mobility or the possibility of operating machines remotely in extremely hazardous situations, for example, or on inaccessible terrain after a disaster. Staying true to the basic steinexpo principle to make the theoretical tangible, these innovative contributions could also be tested in action or even on site. And, as before, there were again many opportunities to see the machines live in action at the individual exhibitors’ stands. The professional trade visitors in particular took advantage of this opportunity and were impressed in many cases. Many exhibitors were pleasantly surprised by the large number of actual deals that were made. Even though sales may not have been the main focus in every case, all exhibiting brands interviewed unanimously praised the incredibly high-quality discussions with clients they were able to have during the course of the fair. This stood out particularly in the enquiries about the course of the fair. The same goes for the unbelievably good organisation, which was explicitly praised several times, and also for the solidarity with each other. Even those brands that were presented at steinexpo for the first time were already certain to be back at the next one. Virtually everyone, old and new exhibitors alike, agreed that the unique way of presenting and introducing a company's own machines and products, as here at steinexpo, is a wonderful opportunity to really become visible. An effect that was not only used by the outdoor exhibitors, but also by those in the pavilions. Wherever movement dominated, the trade fair satisfaction ratings were extremely high.

The positive side of doing things for the sake of doing things

All participants also agree that professional cooperation and interaction often brings more benefits than mindless competition. This is certainly also a trademark of steinexpo, which has coined the hashtag #steinexpocommunity in the social media sphere for good reason. Impressive demonstrations of various excavator-wheel loader-dumper combinations and a variety of special equipment were once again presented on the joint area A during the four days of the fair, perfectly moderated by Raul Helmer. Interested spectators watched the action from the comfort of two grandstands, which provided seating and a "stadium atmosphere" for 280 people, surrounded by some of the biggest brands in the industry. And for the first time, an additional LED video wall provided views of the special details of the quarry giants. Well worth seeing and no less gigantic were in any case all the other individual presentations of construction machinery, drilling rigs, attachments and processing equipment of renowned brands at the exhibitors' stands in the remaining areas B to D. The specially designed special area "The Tube", accessible through the popular tunnel, also offered some wonderful atmospheric moments and amazement at the diverse special events.

Word gets around ...

The word about the uniqueness of the steinexpo experience is spreading. It was not without reason that one focus of the demonstration fair was on internationalisation. At the official press conference, for example, the vice-president of the Chinese company Mesda and the product manager of the US-based company Twin Disc Inc. spoke. And the trend of international participation was also noticeable among exhibitors, with international exhibitors accounting for 25%, thus occupying every fourth exhibition space. This is an increase compared to the previous trade fair of 2017 with 23.5% of international participation.

The bar has been raised even higher now

The final result once again underlines the high acceptance of steinexpo in the market. The exhibitors heaped praise on the organisation and flexibility of the organising company Geoplan GmbH. The professional steinexpo experience of the set-up and planning team of the Clausthal Technical University was evident in the smooth running of the trade fair in all its phases. Trade Fair Director Dr Friedhelm Rese explains in his assessment of steinexpo 2023: "After 6 years, I am immensely proud of and happy with what we have been able to put in place here, despite all the difficulties companies had to deal with in recent years. I would like to thank everyone for their continued trust in our trade fair concept and the visitors for their interest in our event, which is truly unique on the European mainland.”

As a result, the bar has been raised once again for the 12th steinexpo. The next event will take place at the MHI quarry in Nieder-Ofleiden from 02 to 05 September 2026.

steinexpo: As the biggest and most significant stone quarry demonstration exhibition on the European continent, the steinexpo had its premiere in the Nieder-Ofleiden stone quarry in September 1990. The trade fair is held in a three-year cycle. By means of impressive live demonstrations against the backdrop of a magnificent stone quarry, manufacturers and dealers of building and processing machinery, utility vehicles and heavy vehicles as well as plants for the extraction and treatment of materials put their performance capabilities on display. The recycling of mineral building materials represents another focus point. The steinexpo is organised by Geoplan GMBH, Iffezheim.
