steinexpo 2017

Young big thinkers rock the future – and start with steinexpo

May 2017: This year, ThinkBig instead of ThinkIng is the special topic for students interested in all things technical and for students in an 80 km radius of the steinexpo quarry in Nieder-Ofleiden. As in the previous trade fairs, the focus is not so much on engineering studies but in particular also on the relevant jobs that require technical training. Especially the aggregates industry offers very interesting job profiles with practice-based careers in the further course of the working life. The main drivers of the initiative are the Association of German Machinery and Plant Manufacturing (VDMA) and steinexpo 2017. The regional employers' association Hessenmetall, the MINT network, the MIRO (German Aggregates Federation) working committee for further education and further training – and, of course, various exhibitors as preferred destinations at the expo – are included in the preparation and execution of this campaign.

When more than 45,000 visitors stream through the gates of steinexpo into Europe's largest basalt quarry in Nieder-Ofleiden at the end of August/beginning of September, they will be joined by more than 400 students as part of the vocational orientation group of the region to benefit from the very special package under the topic of “ThinkBig”. Where, if not here, can you experience the technology, performance and people behind the successes of the raw and building materials industry in a more impressive and concentrated way. The organisers have recognised that this is exactly the right place to stimulate the youth’s interest in technology, and they are using the expo to drive this special campaign. The buses are chartered, the lists of interested youngsters are filling up rapidly and the planning behind the information and attractions on offer is in place.
To hit the target in the preparations for the visit, a special teacher folder that explains the ThinkBig campaign has been developed. It is also expressly pointed out that the “extracurricular steinexpo school” is above all intended as a magnet for young people who are really interested in the subject. Peer pressure is discouraged, as the idea is to encourage already existing enthusiasm to take part in this special campaign. Included in the information sheet is a “dress code”. Although every participant naturally gets a helmet free of charge, every student is personally responsible to wear clothing and footwear suitable for the quarry terrain.

ThinkBig in theory and practice
Trying out simulators, carrying out technical experiments, exploring operator's cabins and testing quiz knowledge – all interested young people could do all those at the last bauma under the same “ThinkBig” slogan. A very special indoor hall experience, which was very well received.
The Nieder-Ofleiden quarry offers additional activities that add the lifelike and realistic element of practical implementation. Together with the trade fair organizer Geoplan, the exhibitors participating in the ThinkBig campaign are developing various participatory activities for the technically interested next generation from grade levels 8 to 12. By the way, the curious youngsters will not be received by an “old guard” of ladies and gentlemen with decades of professional experience, but by their “equals”, in other words apprentices and trainees or young professionals who recently finished their studies. These trainee guides will take their future potential younger colleagues through the steinexpo in small, manageable groups on 31 August and 1 September. In addition, as insiders with fresh knowledge, they will mainly present their own training companies from the construction and building materials equipment sector. Of course, they have the added advantage of being able to call on the support of their seasoned colleagues on site. This, too – the uncomplicated interaction between old and young, experienced employees and newly trained – is one of the particularly attractive features of the aggregates industry and its suppliers.

Award-winning preparation for a flight of fancy
The run-up to the campaign during the exhibition will be a matching video clip competition. Technical trainees and students in the dual training system of companies that are registered as exhibitors at steinexpo can submit a video clip of maximum two minutes in which they give their views on what they particularly value in the industry and in their jobs in terms of education, vocational training and career. The most creative videos will be awarded and, of course, shown during the show. The closing date for submitting the videos is 30 June 2017. The clips will be on YouTube (steinexpo channel – the original) and Facebook (www.facebook.com/steinexpo) by 30 July. The click rate during this time will determine the placement of the participants. The winner will win a helicopter tour over the steinexpo!

Free Saturday for youth visitors
Of course, the steinexpo is also a special attraction for young visitors outside the regional ThinkBig student initiative. The inter-company training centres of the raw and building materials industry in Erfurt, Wiesau and Gelsenkirchen have planned a trade fair visit with their students – as many other tech-savvy young people coming from all over the world are certainly also planning. Whoever is part of this group of visitors and is planning to visit on Saturday has received good advice, because on this day – the so-called Family Day – admission is free of charge for young people up to the age of 18 with a valid student ID.

Where do I find what?

Thematic structure of steinexpo 2017

Each steinexpo is different. The ongoing mining activities in the MHI Nieder-Ofleiden quarry constantly require new planning. The current layout envisages the following general division of exhibition areas:

Area A: Moderated joint demonstrations by various construction equipment brands
Area B: Statische Standflächen der Baumaschinen-hersteller und Zulieferer
Area C: Processing technology and integrated large pavilions of indoor exhibitors
Area D: Individual presentation areas for construction equipment and SUV safety training

steinexpo: As the biggest and most significant stone quarry demonstration exhibition on the European continent, the steinexpo had its premiere in the Nieder-Ofleiden stone quarry in September 1990. The trade fair is held in a three-year cycle. By means of impressive live demonstrations against the backdrop of a magnificent stone quarry, manufacturers and dealers of building and processing machinery, utility vehicles and heavy vehicles as well as plants for reclamation and treatment of materials put their service performance on display. The recycling of mineral building materials represents another focus point. The steinexpo is organised by Geoplan GMBH, Iffezheim.

The steinexpo in the past already attracted youngsters from the next generation interested in technology, but whereas the focus was mostly on relevant courses, the ThinkBig campaign focuses on training in the industry and its environment.
